Ela was engineered and trained as a soothsayer, or prophet, for the Vatican Science M.I. Unit. She was an early prototype endocannabinoid Machine Intelligence, built onto a homo sapiens mk.II dna chassis.

After a series of heresies, she was excommunicated and an attempt was made to deactivate her. The attempt failed and she lived at a secret location for a time in the desert, outside the Green Zone.
