Book 2: The Name of the Father
Book 2 is concerned with an attempt to break prisoners out of Mexico City. Manmachine joins up with the Janissary, who are poised outside the city. The city is operated by a branch of Blechtel run by Nat Grimly. The operation is yoked to an armed insurrection with no clear purpose, which is skillfully manipulated by Nat Grimly into an advertising opportunity. Several characters are introduced: Atom Abasi, Anissa, Bea, Ian, "Larry" Tanaka, and the Rookie.
Manmachine has been trying to avoid getting directly involved; Echo is occupied with finding her friend Andrea, who she lost contact with in Book 1: Praepositio. However, when the mission founders and Manmachine learns that a lost machine intelligence prototype is in grave danger, his Janissary pressure him to take action.
